For those who have not been following the various happenings in North Carolina, Gov. McCrory has been actively working to dismantle several areas of the University of North Carolina, including targeting programs that are not directly tied to specific business ventures.*
Most recently, UNCW has removed Dr. Katie Peel from her position as Director of Women and Gender Studies, as part of his desire to ensure that students at public universities not be subjected to the liberal arts: “If you want to take gender studies that’s fine. Go to a private school, and take it.”
The mission of public universities** is to provide full, vibrant educational experiences to students, not to limit their options. State universities serve the people of the state, and not the whims of the Governor’s office.
One such whim – executed by the Dean as part of the “Chancellor’s will” – was the removal of Dr. Katie Peel from her position, without cause or explanation. To that end – and to show support for a wonderful scholar, mentor, and activist whose work is vital at the university – please sign and share this petition.
*Which is a pathetic – but sadly effective – means of eliminating liberal arts programs, those programs that various studies note are the most useful when preparing students for life – and employment – outside the university.
**I should know, I teach at one.
